Buttressed by mountains of the Coast Ranges and battered by Puget Sound’s relentless surge, the Pacific Northwest has a stunning variety of natural features. These features range from the glacier-clad Cascade peaks to shadowy rain forests to scalloped tidal pools at the sea’s edge. The shoreline in the Canadian Gulf Islands and the Strait of Georia is a sheltered inland sea, nourished, but not fiercely punished, by the sea. A paradise for those who sketch or watercolor. Bring your camera and sketch or watercolor pad and we will accommodate your artistic talents.
Are you also a bird watcher that will revel in the oyster catcher as he favors mussels as well as oysters, prying open the shells with its flattened bill? Or perhaps the pigeon guillemot, which prefers small fish like blennies, sticklebacks, and sculpins, catching them near the surface. Perhaps you enjoy the double-crested cormorant which menu on the larger herring, which it pursues by swimming underwater. Porpoises and Killer Whales (Orcinus Orca) find the waters of the Northwest an ideal playground, probably because the cruising terrain, as well as the menu, is so variegated. Seals and sea lions are often seen as they bask on the rocky shoreline or lie on the floating log booms. |
